VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES REPORT - June, 2000
Tanjung Puting National Park
by Drh. I Gede Suarsadana

Dear Friends

First of all please accept our apology for being late to distribute out report.

There are still many illegal logging in Tanjung Puting National Park. It is a bout 2 - 4 series of logs came out from the park area through Sekonyer River.

It is seem like there is not anything we can do to stop them due to too anything involve in this situation. In June 26 there were 20 NGOs made a protest to the police department because so far the police only protect a small area which is close to Camp Leakey. The police department said they start from this area and eventually will cover the whole area. We do not know when it will really happen

Here with the report which was reported by Drh I Made Widana, Susiantoro and Wanto.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely yours,

Drh I Gede Nyoman Bayu Wirayudha

Special Report

Alui (OrangUtan)

In this special report, I would like to give the latest news about Alui's condition, it will include some information how we found his problem from the first time until we released him again to the first station (Tanjung Harapan).

Here is my detail report :

May, 27th 2000 (Saturday)

Bonzen (male), Nyoman (male) came to the feeding station at 9 o clock in the morning without Alui (female?). They used to come to the feeding area together, but this time Alui was left behind. We searched him for an hour around the station and finally we found her in the bush behind the clinic. Her condition was very bad and dehydrated when we saw her for the first time. I decided to take her to the clinic to give any necessary treatment. I gave her Lactate Ringer and Antibiotic because he looked dehydrated and shown an infection sign.

I also did the fecal test and the result was there were some intestinal parasite in her feces. I also found that she had diarrhea. I stopped the Lactate Ringer infusion when she start to have milk orally.

May, 28th 2000 (Sunday)

We decided to keep all the babies (Bonzen, Nyoman and Alui) in the cage for a moment to prevent Alui from stress. From the experience if we separate any young orangutan who use to live together they will easily get stress. We fed them in the morning but Alui just want to drink a few bit milk and refuse to eat the bananas. I continued to give her antibiotic injection .

Due to Alui's weak condition we still kept the babies in the cage.

May, 29th 2000 (Monday)

Alui began refuse to drink and eat when we gave them milk and bananas. Her condition getting worst and there was a sign of dehydration. I gave her Lactate Ringer infusion (iv) with sedative and antibiotic injection(im). We did this for a day long. When she urinated, I found something wrong with her vagina. The urine is not coming from the normal way but it was came out from a hole under the gland ? or something like a gland penis. I watched it carefully and it was not a swollen clitoris but it was a small gland penis and also the scrotum without testicles in it. The gland penis it self is stuck on the skin around the scrotum. There was no hole on top of the gland that was why the urine did not come out from the hole under the gland. From this abnormality anatomy the urine went in to the anus and it made the anus swollen (infection). We just realised that Alui is a female not male. When he got diarrhea it make his condition get worst. I found that Alui gets diarrhea often (Drh. Gede Suarsdana's report).

I decided to take Alui to Pangkalan Bun to have the further examination and treatment. I consulted her problem with with surgery specialist Dr. Ramiadji sp.bd. (human doctor). From the physical description we gave to him he predicted that Alui got the Urinoma or Hipospaddy disorder. To make sure about that, he promised to check Alui in the next morning. He also suggested me to give the prevention from the secondary infection by giving Alui the Fosmicin injection (antibiotic intra vein) three times a day for three days.

May, 30 June, 2000

Alui got the treatment at the Mr. Susiantoro house. The injection was given by intra vein at 10.00 , 18.00 , 02.00 mixed with the lactate ringers solution.

On the third day Alui got better and we stopped the antibiotic injection and then continued it with vitamins on his milk.

June, 7 2000

This day we have checked by using a catheter through the hole under the gland penis. To applied the catheter we have to anaesthetized Alui and then use the poly catheter for 2 days. According to the doctor Alui got the Hipospaddy type 3 or 4, and the doctor suggested us to do the Roentgen test to make sure if there is other hole in the urethra.

June, 8 2000

We did consult to the surgeon about the possibility of a surgery to Alui. He said that the operation will take about 2 - 3 hours, and we need a special place to do it because we could not do the operation in the public hospital. He also informed that the operation will cost Rp 5,000,000, the post operation maintenance and the possibility of the operation result.

This time Alui's condition was very good and he getting stronger than before.

June, 9 2000

We canceled the operation for Alui because the post operation maintenance have a higher risk due to the animal behavior. Beside that we were not sure whether he can be a reproductive orang utan or not. We also got a report from other orangutan rehabilitation project about the same case . They had done the same operation to the orang utan but the result was not good so we decided to cancel the operation and wait for a further development.

June, 11 2000

Finally we brought Alui back to Tanjung Harapan and we have to give him a special treatment for a while so Alui has stay in the cage and we sometime give him time to play with the other baby orang utan named DR. Adung (male, 8 months old).

Alui s condition is getting better and stronger even with his genitalia disorder.

That is all my special report and I also include the expense report for the trip to Tanjung Puting from May 18th until June 15th 2000.

Best regard

Drh I Made Widana

Pondok Tanggui

June 30th 2000

The condition Alui the orangutan who has an Urinoma or Hipospaddy disorder is getting better. She finally can get along with the other baby named Adung. As she still in a recovery period we feed her milk by bottle as we use to do to the other babies who could not eat by their own or the one who lose their appetite. We also add vitamins in her milk to hopefully she become stronger to survive from her problem. Right now Alui and Adung are learning to make the nest.

Bonzen and Nyoman are more and more independent. They spend more of their night time in the Jungle. Sometime they come to the post during the night.

Davida the ex captive orangutan with her baby David come to the post for a several time to the post during the day or in the afternoon. Recently we also found a wild orangutan visited this post.

We move Michael from Tanjung Harapan to Pondok Tanggui due he often bother the babies when they are having their milk.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Susiantoro and Wanto
