VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES REPORT - April, 2002
Tanjung Puting National Park

Dear friends,

Greeting from FNPF

First of all we would to thanks to whom always support us in any way especially in this period when we have a quite bad situation that make us could not do our routine work anymore. As you may have been informed we could not avoid to move out to the park . So far we do not have any personal problem with the villager as they assume that the problem is between the villager and the park management / government.

Here with the report from our staff for May period.

Once again thank you for your kind attention and hopefully we could continue our work soon.

Sincerely yours,

Drh I Gede Nyoman Bayu Wirayudha
Director of FNPF.

Orangutan Rehabilitation Program

The orangutan rehabilitation program that we only could do at Pondok Tanggui station is running quite well and showed some progress. The progress especially seen very significant on the babies that we brought from Tanjung Harapan Nyoman, Bonzen, Adung and Lady. They could adapt very well in this station.

Nyoman and Bonzen never slept under shelter in this whole month or at the ranger post. From the keeper observation from the morning till evening we found that both of them already knew where to find food around the post without lead by any orangutan who have stayed for long time at this station. They originally learned everything from Rosmery, Copral, Corin and Siswa. They socialise very well with other orangutan. They become a routine visitor at the feeding station nearly in the whole month.

Adung and Lady have a significant resistance to the outdoor situation. At night they sleep at the cage without close to the shelter without roof without any medical problem, event we still have quite a lot rain. Adung's weight increase quite rapidly. He is about 0,5 kg lighter from Lady who is 2 years older than him. His face also looked different with more hairs. Both Adung and Lady use to play close to the acclimation cage on the big tree. Adung even dare to play with Anhar, Siswa, Rosmery, Rika, Darmono, Copral, Corin, Nyoman and Bonzen. Not like Adung Lady spend most of the time by her self. She is very patient compare with Adung. When it is rain Adung love to use the rice bag as blanket but Lady like to play with rain. Both of them consume about 450 ml of milk per day.

Some of the orangutan who have stayed at this station for long time very seldom come to the feeding station. Mandolin never come to the feeding station since April 27, Masran and Klombang only come once, Copral never come for more than three months. Pangkut came twice this month and she still pregnant.

In general the health condition of all ex captive orangutans are in a good condition. We also keep checking the keeper health condition to make sure they do not contaminate the orangutan or in the other way.

Reforestation Project.

We continue our reforestation project which is include nursery, seedling acclimation, land preparation, and growth observation.

The seedling that still in the second stage of acclimation are Nyantuh, Rangas, Bentan, Bedaru, Keranntungan, Medang, Sundi, Idur, Bekasi, Ubar totally 2780. There are about 218 seedling ready to be replanted.

We have prepared about 3,5 hectares of land. We prepare it for the student, our staff and also for the park staff field work and study that are co-ordinate with the tourism department, some high school and local government.

We did three growth observation in this month. From 1907 that we planted at the first time there are about 7,2%, the new leaf bout 4,2, the new bud about 1,2.

We start to collect media for the third project and will collect seed and seedling that have a good resistant than we could find from the first project.

Thank you for your support.
