VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES REPORT - March, 2002
Tanjung Puting National Park
Dear Friends,
First of all we would to thank those who keep supporting us allowing us to continue our activities in Tanjung Puting National Park. We also would like to thank Jakarta International School participants for joining our reforestation program during their visit and those visitors who donated some items as attached.
We are very sorry to inform you that the first orangutan rehabilitation is still being occupied by the local people as they do not get what they want.
They use some of the buildings as their house but so far there is has not been any destructive action in this camp. We hope as soon as the government and the villagers can make an agreement that could satisfy both sides, we can continue our work there again.
The only work that we still have at the village right now is the nursery unit. There is a villager name Mr. Dullah who helps us to maintain the seedlings that actually have been ready to be replanted anytime.
On this occasion we also would like to thank US Fish and Wildlife Service that have given us a green light to support our reforestation program that will allow us to make a much larger reforestation project and involve local people (villagers, students and other parties ). I hope we will get more support for our other programs so we can convince the villagers that they can earn a living at the same time to conserve / preserve their natural resources.
Here attached is the report from our staff.

ACTIVITY REPORT
March 2002

Orangutan Rehabilitation
In this month the orangutan mostly coming to the feeding station are Rosmery with her son Rica and her adopted son Darmono, Bonzen, Nyoman, Copral, Corin. Linda, Siswa, Anhar, Pangkut and Klombang seldom come to the feeding station. The rest of the orangutans have not come this month.
Since we moved the babies from Tanjung Harapan to Pondok Tanggui, Adung and Lady show very good progress. They slept in their nest 17 times during this month. We still give a special attention to them as they are still quite young to be by themselves. If they do not build their nests we still accommodate them in their cage.
Nyoman and Bonzen seem like they can adapt quite well at Pondok Tanggui. Bonzen just recovered from parasite problem last month and he has gained more weight. We try not to put them into their cage unless it is really necessary. Right now, both of them are used to sleeping in their own nests and just a few times come to the ranger post. Nyoman and Bonzen still come to the feeding station everyday.
The 2 orangutans named Copral and Corin that used to enjoy hanging around the visitors, especially Copral, do not show this attitude anymore. They start to play with Adung and Lady during feeding time instead of with visitors. We keep telling the visitors not to initiate any contact with the orangutan but as usual sometimes the visitor forget about the purpose of rehabilitation as soon as they are facing this durable creature. They were also followed by a healthy juvenile male once on March 29, 2002.
In this month we also noticed one of the juvenile orangutan name Klombang coming to feeding station with a wound on his front head and the back of his neck area. He came twice on March 7th and 12th. The wound has almost healed and we believe he fought with another male as they start to reach their sexual maturity.
We observe that Pangkut's pregnancy is still fine. We observed her mating during June - September 2001. From her appearance and our observation we predict that her pregnancy is about 6 - 7 months.
Reforestation project
In this month we got some assistance from the park staff Ivan Akananda and Nuriadi Yudistira who stayed at Pondok Tanggui and join the reforestation project. We also got assistance from Jakarta International School students during their visit on March 24, 2002 and who have collected 387 seedlings from the forest.
Replanted Seedling
In this project we monitor the seedling growth every month, that includes any development that we can observe visually. In this early stage we just could observe which one has new bud, or either dead or stable. From our observation the seedling that get a lot sun exposure grow better then the ones that get less sunlight. In the 2 hectares area divided into 5 plots, we can say most of the seedling are growing well while some of them died. Here is the detailed information of each plot as below:
Bonzen Plot: Consist of 15 rows, 234 seedling replanted, 18 died, 123 have new bud.
Rica Plot : Consist of 25 rows, 298 seedling replanted, 13 died, 148 have new bud.
Linda Plot : Consist of 28 rows, 509 seedling replanted, 30 died, 271 have new bud.
Pangkut plot : Consist of 46 rows, 417 seedling replanted, 0 died, 338 have new bud.
Rosmery Plot : Consist of 47 rows, 585 seedling replanted, 37 died, 443 have new bud.
Total seedling have been replanted : 2043
Total seedling died : 118 ( 5,8% )
Total seedling have new bud : 1323 ( 65% )
Nursery unit
In this month we already have about 3100 new seedling from our nursery unit at Pondok Tanggui Station. Most of the seedling came from the seed that we have collected in the previous month consisting of:
Land preparation
We have prepared 0,5 hectare for the next re-plantation with 40 rows. We hope we will get more and more support from other parties especially local students in order to build up a sense of belonging for their magnificent natural resources.
