VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES REPORT - February, 2002
Tanjung Puting National Park
Dear Friends,
In our report for February, we only report to you our activities at Pondok Tanggui and our office in Kumai. Since Tanjung Harapan station is being occupied by villagers, Pondok Tanggui is the only station left for us to work at. We keep the two babies ( Adung and Lady ) at our office in Kumai because we still worry that the villagers will take over Pondok Tanggui as what they said to us before.
We are very sorry to inform all of you that our veterinarian had to leave Kumai because somebody said they will kill him if there is no response from our government regarding the villager claim. At the moment, Drh. Agus the quarantine veterinarian is assisting us for any medical problem.
Please find our staff report below.
Sincerely yours
Drh. I Gede Nyoman Bayu Wirayudha
Director of FNPF

ACTIVITY REPORT
February 2002
PONDOK TANGGUI
We have observed that the number of orangutans coming to the feeding station has increased again. We believe it is because the forest fruit is not enough this time for them. They came to the feeding station quite often. There were Rosemary and her child Rika and Darmono, Linda, Pangkut and Siswa. The other orangutan that have been here for long time almost never came to the feeding station and the ranger's post.
We brought Nyoman and Bonzen to Pondok Tanggui on January 19, 2002 when the villagers took over Tanjung Harapan station. They came to post very often especially when they were left by Rosmery after feeding time. Their adaptation ability are very good and they could get along with the other ex captive orangutans.
Sometimes they follow Rosmery and play with her babies Rika and Darmono. We observed that they have a better interaction with Rosemery and they can learn more than from Davida at Tanjung Harapan. We believe the more they have interaction with the adult orangutan that have survived or wild will give them a bigger change to survive. The young ex captive could imitate how to survive in the forest from those adult orangutans.
Nyoman and Bonzen already could make a response when we call them during feeding time. They come to the feeding station to get their meal. We only feed them at the feeding station and join the other to have meal no where else. We always take them to the feeding station and let them to have their meal before the rest of the ex captive orangutan at this station.
It has been continued for three months and now they can come to feeding station by them self. We still do not let Nyoman and Bonzen follow Rosemery and other orangutan too long in the forest because we noticed that they looked very tired when they were following other orangutan. Because of this they lose their appetite to eat and drink and their faces looked paler than normal. We brought Drh. Agus to check their condition and give any necessary treatment.
From the fecal test, Drh. Agus found than both of them got intestinal worm infection. At the moment we have to keep them in the cage for next treatment. On February 6, Pangkut came to feeding station. We observed her condition and found out that she is pregnant. We can tell by her swollen vagina and also fromher behavior. She looked very different than before. Generally, she is in good condition.
Copral, Corin and Doyok never showed up at station or at the feeding station since December 2001. Beside the orangutan rehabilitation project we also continue some other program such as :
We are paying more attention to reforestation program right now such as Seed collection that is continued by seedling preparation, replace any dead trees that we have planted before. To mark the reforestation site every certain location have been given name according to the name of our ex captive orangutan.
Total trees we have planted until the end of February 2002 at Pondok Tanggui are 2043 trees.
KUMAI
Adung and Lady are very well but we feel very sorry that they have to stay most of the day in cage because there is no place for them to play at our office area in Kumai.
They carry more weight quite rapidly. We hope that we can take them back to Tanjung Harapan or Pondok Tanggui very soon because we are very afraid it will interrupt their rehabilitation process.
Drh. Agus, a veterinarian from the airport quarantine have checked their condition and he did not find any serious problem on them. We have to clean up their cage everyday and all the equipment in their cage.
