Volunteer Activities Report, Tanjung Harapan Most of this time I spent at this station to care for a new infant
Orangutan named Budi. On October 23rd a young female Orangutan, about 2,5
years old was brought to me. It was being kept as a pet in Pangkalan Bun
and has spent the last five months in close contact with humans. I gave
Budi Anthelmintion as a new comer to prevent and eliminate worm infection.
A couple of days after she arrived in the park I found nodul with pus on
her body. I diagnosed she had a pustular dermatitis due to bacteria
infection. I treated Budi with antibiotic injection and after a week the noduls
dried. I thought that stress factor as predispese due to environment changes. After this condition I saw slight improvement butI found persistent
diarrhoea, weakness and loss in her appetite. When I palpated her abdomen,
she looked in pain. Her faeces contained mucus and blood. I did a fesical
examination and the result was positive bacteria infection, positive
hookworm eggs ( strehgyl type). I treated her with antibiotics and also gave her
antelminthic with single dose. Day after day her diarrhoea did not stop,
and her condition was unstable. I fed her by hand because she rejected to
eat and I administered subcutaneusly electrolit solution injection after
her vomiting. After three weeks I tried to nurse her back to health, on
December 3rd she died. I did autopsy to make a correct diagnosis and will find out what was the
cause of her death. Many of internal organs were injured like:
Hepatemegaly and cirrhosis, splenomegaly, oedematcus and haemorragon
kidney, celitis and odematous on large bowel. I will send the internal
organ to test in laboratory in South Kalimantan to make cordiagnosis. I
will inform the result after I get the laboratorium test results. Best regards, Drh. I Gede Suarsadana
