Tanjung Puting National Park
by Drh. I Gede Suarsadana

Dear Friends

Greeting from Friends of National Parks Foundation (FNFP).

Thank you very much to those who are keep supporting FNPF that allow us to continue our activities. Right now we are starting our reforestation program. In this first step we start by training our staff and any villager who are interested in this activity to prepare the nursery. We will collect the compost and seedling from the forest nearby the reforestation site to make sure we will not bother the bio diversity on the site where we will start our small project for a pilot project.

We hope when we have enough budget for the bigger project we will have enough people to do it.

Once again thank you for all of your support.

Sincerely yours,

Drh I Gede Nyoman Bayu Wirayudha
Director of FNPF

Volunteer Report
By. Drh. Herlin Rangkuty June 2001

Dear Friends,

In this report I would like to inform you our new project that we started from this month. The new project is Re-plantation project on the ex burnt area site (from the last big fire 1997). I would also include the orangutan rehabilitation project activities, fish farm, and our daily activities at two stations post, Pondok Tanggui and Tanjung Harapan.

I. PONDOK TANGGUI

On this station we did:

  • Feeding for the orangutan
  • Recording the orangutan's activities
  • Maintenance the facilities
  • Maintenance the orangutan trial around the station
  • Orangutan's health control
  • Providing the information for visitor

I observe the orangutan activity at the feeding place everyday. There are only about 4 - 8 orangutans come to the feeding place. It was began two weeks ago when the fruits are no longer exists around the station and the river's bank. From my observation in the field I think the fruits season will end this month. We can tell by the activity of the orangutan. We never seen any wild orangutan along the river's bank since two weeks ago and the orangutan rehabilitant come to the feeding regularly since then. Two weeks ago three rangers / keepers and one visitor walked from Pondok Tanggui to Tanjung Harapan. They didn't see any wild orangutan and the rehabilitant orangutan. The trail that we have made five months ago is still in good and clean condition. For your information we have done 4 trekkings in the last six months after we made the trail. There is no report about the wild orangutan presence at moment.

II. TANJUNG HARAPAN

We maintain the place where Adung and Lady practice to climb in order to make it easier for us to watch them and protect them from snake and monitor lizards. We also maintain the trial to the re-plantation site along the Seikonyer river.

The place where we are going to do the re-plantation project is about 9 ha and most of it are swamp. We found out that it is so hard to make a hole for the seedling because the swamp is very deep and we still need to find out what kind of tree that we can plant there. We are collecting more information about this.

This month, Davida and her son, Congo with her baby and Janari come to the feeding regularly. Nyoman and Bonzen go with Davida to the forest for sometime, and with Congo on the other day. Davida and Congo's guidance is very important for Bonzen and Nyoman's progress. They teach them how to survive in the forest, for example making nest, fight and find their foods.

III. ORANGUTAN'S HEALTH CONDITION

There is no serious problem with their health condition in both of the station. We maintain their diet with vitamins and minerals and also control their foods everyday.

The babies, Adung and Lady got mild diarrhea. From the fecal examination, I found Strongylus sp. in her feces. I have given her Anthelmintic (Mebendazole) every 3 days. After a week of treatment, her condition is getting better. I told another ranger / keeper to take care of Adung despite of the baby sitter to make him more comfortable. We have two persons to take care of Adung now.

IV. FISH FARM

We have finished the new fish ponds, the breeding ponds and growing ponds. We have lots of help from the villagers from the project began. We use the ex-cage of the orangutan and nipah palm's leaf for the roof was made by women. Recently We have problem with our fish farming. Some of them were eaten by birds such as King Fisher and Owl. That is all I can report at moment.

Thank you very much for the attention.

Sincerely Yours,
Drh. Herlin Rangkuty
FNPF's Veterinarian

VOLUNTEER REPORT
International Association of Agricultural Students
July 2001

Hello,

We are Liesbeth and Jan from Belgium. We've been volunteers from 10 up to 24 July 2001.

The main reason for our visit was to gather information on the FNPF projects regarding agricultural activities in the village. FNPF already started 8 fish farm and is planning to do re-forestation in ex-burned area. Furthermore, planting of banana, pineapple and vegetable is scheduled as well as hydroponics agriculture.

With IAAS (International Association of Agricultural Students) we aim for sending a continues stream of last year agricultural students, who can conduct helpful research concerning these topics (soil and water research). During our visit we got to know Tanjung Puting National Park and the village Tanjung Harapan. WE visited the different sites, where project are planned.

Apart from that, we also gave English classes in the village (nice children by the way) and we went to Pangkalan Bun for buying paint and give the guest house a new layer.

Concerning the orangutan : the day we arrived, Nyoman and Bonzen were seen for the last time. After 4 days, the rangers went out looking for them each day. WE hope they'll be back soon.

We would like to thank every one for allowing us to stay with, and learn so much of the rangers, the vet, and the orangutan.

See You, Jan de Schampbelaere Liesbeth Driesen
