Volunteer Report
By Drh. Herlin Rangkuty
March 30, 2001

Dear Friends,

First of all I would like to ask apologize for the late of my monthly report as I have to finished some activities in the Park. From this month until the next two month I will include the Udayana University Veterinarian student’s report who has been doing their volunteer activities in Tanjung Putting National Park. They are helping us in rehabilitation program, fish project in the village, and practicing their veterinary knowledge.

Here is my Report:

PONDOK TANGGUI

We did the daily activities like equipment maintenance, recording the facilities we have and fixed some damaged things. We have finished to fix the bridge from the river to the station, shelter, and the path way to the forest and to the feeding place. When we feed the orangutan we also record the name of orangutan which are visiting the feeding place. With the veterinarian student assistance I checked the orangutan condition and so far we do not find any health problem in the orangutan.

TANJUNG HARAPAN

We have finished some activities like :
- Rebuild the bridge and the dock.
- Fixed the engine room and the engine it self.
- Fixed the roof of the Guest house, ranger hut, and Information room.
- Rearrange Adung’s and Lady’s cage.
- Kelotok’s maintenance.
- Check and Record the health of the orangutan.
- Discussed the plan, introduction, directed, evaluated the students and rangers.

ORANGUTAN REHABILITATION PROGRAM

There is nothing seriously with the orangutan’s condition in Tanjung Harapan and Pondok Tanggui generally, only Adung got diarrhea. We checked his feces and found Balantidium sp. in it. He got his Metronidazole medicine third times a day, Imodium and Oralit.

We have to discuss the rehabilitation program we have before because some of the orangutan in Pondok Tanggui still visits the station regularly.

Best Regard,
Drh. Herlin Rangkuty

VETERINARY STUDENTS REPORT

By the Udayana University Veterinary Students
First Month Report

The First Week Activities

In our first week staying in the Park we did the Introduction and adaptation activities in the Park. We have this conclusion :

The Park with its 415,500 ha in width has so many kind species in plant and animal. There are three orangutan rehabilitation station in the park which are :
- Tanjung Harapan station as the first place for orangutan rehabilitation station. This place is for treatment and look after the babies because in this station there is a small clinic for the orangutan.
- Pondok Tanggui Station as the second place for orangutan to have some practices, training and try to survive in the forest after the have moved from Tanjung Harapan.
- Camp Leakey as the third station is also for release the orangutan when they are ready to survive by themselves in the forest.

The main problem for the park are the illegal logging and mining which is make the worst destruction to the park. The community around the park does not understand about the park and its ecosystem. We also knew that there is not much of Indonesian scholar interest in the park development. Maybe because of the limited budget and information.

The Second Week Activities

We did the discussion and make our plan under Drh. Herlin control. The plan was:
- How to treat and look after the orangutan rehabilitation
- Find out orangutans problem, mainly their diseases and how to treat the diseases
- Make some activities that we think can solve the community problem like fish farming and vegetables farming.
- Recording the medicine needed and equipment in the clinic. We know that the clinic is desperately need some laboratory equipment to make a perfect diagnose to orangutan.

The Third Week Activities

Tanjung Harapan.

1. Make the orangutan formal record for health treatment including:
Body temperature
General Behavior
Diagnose
Body weight
Treatment
Parasite control

2. The medical treatment
Adung’s diarrhea
Prevent the intestinal parasite for Lady, Nyoman and Bonzen.
Adung’s influenza
Adung’s skin problems
Vitamin and minerals treatment for Adung, Lady, Nyoman and Bonzen.

Pondok Tanggui.

We did the same program in this station. So far, we could not make any parasite test because the microscope we have is broken. We still looking for the lens (Oculer 40 X ).

That is all we can report for this month and on this occasion we want to say thank you for the chance we have to do our volunteer activities with the FNPF assistance.

Sincerely Yours,

Ari Sapto Nugroho, Drs. Med. Vet.
Lalu Irwan Handri, Drs. Med. Vet.
