Tanjung Puting National Park
by Drh. I Gede Suarsadana
Dear Friends
Just for your information since April 15, 2001, OFI have taken over Camp Leakey and insisted the park ranger out from Camp Leakey. Eighteen of OFI staffs led by the staff named Jacky. They mentioned that they have gotten permission to take over Camp Leakey from the park's director and Director General of Conservation. We tried to confirm this matter to the Park's Director, when he was in Bogor that time. The Park's Director said he never give the permission to OFI to take over Camp Leakey. He also said he will clarify this case as soon as he back to Pangkalan Bun. I hope the condition will back to normal soon so we can keep giving our service to the park as usual.
In this occasion I also would like to inform you that we have three vet student who is doing their volunteer activities hopefully until the end of June 2001.
They are :
Bernadus Ari Sapto N, Drs. Med Vet
S Adi Pratomo, Drs. Med Vet
Lalu Ihwan Handri, Drs. Med Vet
As I have informed in our previous report here with the monthly report from our vet at Tanjung Puting.
Sincerely yours,
Drh I Gede Nyoman Bayu Wirayudha

Dear Friends,
First of all I would like to make an apologize for delaying send you my volunteer activities report for March 2001. The orangutans condition are OK in all station at the moment. There are no problems in orangutan's health condition or any kind of diseases. Adung and Lady got non-specific diarrhea and influenza. I treated them with Kaopectat suspension for their diarrhea and Procold suspension for the influenza. I also gave them supportive therapy by Multy-Vitamins for 4 days.
Regarding Urol's condition, on the fifth weeks of treatment, he got better than I decided to release him in Camp Leakey. Before release him I should to get the Park's permission. After the park confirmed that we can do it at Camp Leakey we released him on March 15 2001

There is bad news about the tribal fight in central Kalimantan. The effect has effected to the community services in Tanjung Harapan Village. There is no health services since a month a go. I have to look after them and gave them treatment as long as I can. Because of that we have to use our medicine which use to be for the orangutan but I decided to use them for the villagers.
That is all for my volunteer report. I hope the fight will soon be over and the situation can back to normal again.
Best Regard,
Drh. Herlin Rangkuty
